Right to a healthy future - a PCOD success story

"Hey Sushil, I have great news. I got my cycles today and they went so much better this time. There was very little cramping too. I am so happy!"

- Shweta Jha

I received this text one afternoon and couldn't control my smile. After months of switching to a healthy lifestyle, Shweta finally got her menstrual cycles as expected and the discomfort had reduced. There was regularity, and a reduction in facial hair (hirsutism) and body fat. Quality of life had improved. Nowadays she wasn't stressed half of the month. She could enjoy outings and social gatherings. She was free of physical and emotional discomfort. Shweta got her health back.

Science and Statistics:

PCOD affects 1 in 10 women in India. Moreover, out of those 10, 6 are teenage girls. Polycystic ovary disease (PCOD) is a condition that affects a woman's hormone levels. Women with PCOD produce higher-than-normal amounts of male hormones (androgens). This hormone imbalance causes their body to skip menstrual periods and makes it harder for them to get pregnant. Apart from this, women with PCOD experience abnormal/absence/heavy menstruation, weight gain, acne, loss of hair and oily skin. Add in cramps, depression and mood swings to make things worse.

Common treatments are pharmaceutical drugs, however these fail to address the cause of PCOD, Insulin Resistance, a condition where body stops responding to the hormone Insulin resulting in elevated blood glucose(explained well here). Drugs deal with maintaining hormone levels and blood glucose in the normal range. But what if we maintained blood glucose in the normal range by diet itself? Or rather let our body maintain blood glucose at optimal levels and we just prevent further damage from happening?

Well, that's exactly what we did:

Shweta faced all these issues. It had been a few years since she was diagnosed with PCOD and like any other girl, wanted to find a way out of it. She figured out that a 'healthy fitness lifestyle' is the only way out, while wondering what 'healthy fitness lifestyle' is. It was weird for her that doctors ask to maintain a healthy lifestyle but don't exactly explain what forms a healthy lifestyle. Diet and regular exercise forms the basis but which diet? Why is it different for everyone? How are medicines the go to options for managing PCOD? What about the cause? With lots of doubts in mind, Shweta tried a variety of different diets available on the internet before contacting me.

"The entire consultation was an eye opener for me. The way you broke things down and got to the root cause was amazing. YES, I have the right to be healthy. And I don't want to put more medicines in my body"

And with that, Shweta started her journey. Nutrition, exercise, sleep schedule, mental fitness - everything was being worked on. It wasn't easy too. She was seeing some fat loss however constant illnesses and travel (pre COVID times of course) made it harder for her. But she was eager to learn. And more than that, she was eager to be healthy. So she held on, and with every passing day, her hormones normalized. Her insulin resistance improved and menstrual cycles normalized. Today, over 2 years later, she lives a happy, healthy life with her husband.

It took her 6 months to heal completely. She lost 17 kg of body fat. Her sleep quality and energy levels improved. She wasn't in pain all the time. In fact, she and her husband are now planning for a baby.

Every woman out there who suffers from menstrual irregularities deserves to be healthy. You don't have to rely on pharmaceutical drugs for your entire life. You don't deserve the emotional and physical discomfort. You deserve to be happy. You deserve to be healthy.

It's your right to be healthy.
